The Palazzo Ducale in Venice is one of the landmarks of Venice and a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture, is located in the monumental Piazza San Marco in the Piazzetta and the waterfront. Ancient seat of the Venetian Doge and the judiciary, has followed the story, from the dawn till the fall, and now hosts the Museo Civico di Palazzo Ducale.
The two main facades of the building in Gothic-Venetian facing the square and the pier is built on two levels colonnades topped by a powerful body to marble marquetry.
Main hall of the palace, located on the corner between the pier and the square, receives light through large lancet windows. It is totally free of support columns inside, and yet keeping the roof structure is possible thanks to a clever system of powerful beams and trusses. Its enormous size, 53 meters long and 25 wide and 12 high, which make it one of the largest in Europe, were due to its function as a meeting for the Great Council, the Venetian State sovereign assembly, formed by all the Venetian nobles, arriving in 1200 to include 2000 members, who can put on a series of long two-seat benches placed perpendicular to the wall, where you will find the podium for the Doge and the Signoria.
